CPV Cells And The Need For Clean Energy

By | March 7, 2011

More and More people are aware of the importance of using reliable energy resources. They understand that the fossil fuels that most countries depend on will not last much longer if they are used up at the current rate. It is important therefore to know the variety of options that are available for clean energy sources. One of these options is the use of CPV cells. Here are some questions on this issue.

What does CPV mean? – CPV means concentrated photovoltaic and this has to do with the way in which energy is produced to make electricity. Think about how plants use sunlight through photosynthesis to produce energy. This is done in a natural way without any man made machinery. Whereas to make electricity from the sun, mankind has to create a solar panel that would accommodate this task.

Concentrated voltaic cells are solar cells that are able to absorb a large amount of sunlight on its small surface. This means that it has the ability to absorb the entire spectrum of light that makes up the sun. This spectrum is made up of about seven colors that one would find when they see a rainbow. This produces a more efficient form of energy than a regular solar panel.

How does a CPV cell and a regular solar cell differ? – The main difference between the two has to do with the way in which they produce energy. Regular solar panels use more surface area than the CPV cell. They are also more expensive as a result of this since there is a need for more of them since the energy is not concentrated.

A concentrated photovoltaic cell is different because less cells can be used to produced electricity. Regular solar panels also have the ability to work with diffused light. Diffused light is created on a cloudy day when the sun is completely or partially hidden. CPV solar cells do not work as well on a cloudy day as it takes lots of light to produce electricity.

Why is clean energy important? – There are a number of reasons why it is important to make use of clean energy. Fossil fuels are being depleted due to over consumption of these resources. As more petroleum run cars are produced, there is an ever increasing demand for oil. This oil is usually taken from the earth and it is never replaced.

There are many instances where trees are cut once it is believed that oil is in the ground, like in a forest for example. Many times these trees are not replaced because the focus is on what is in the ground as oppose to the oxygen that the trees provide. In turn this creates problems for the future if care is not taken to be mindful of what is being done.

This shows that there is a need not only for clean energy sources, but for renewable sources of energy. This will help to preserve the resources of the earth that are left. CPV cells can help to provide options for those who choose to go this path. Once it becomes more available to the public, it may serve as the most efficient form of energy for the home.
